Superyacht Charter: What You're Actually Paying For

Superyacht Charter: What You're Actually Paying For

The Base Charter Fee Is Just the Starting Point

When you receive a superyacht charter quote, the headline number is the base charter fee. This covers the vessel itself and the crew's labor. On a 40-meter yacht in the Mediterranean in peak season, that might be €80,000 to €150,000 per week. On an 80-meter vessel in high demand, you're looking at €400,000 and up.

That number does not include fuel, provisions, port fees, or communications. Those are additional.

Understanding APA

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is a prepayment held by the captain to cover running expenses during the charter. Standard APA is 30 to 35 percent of the base charter fee. At the end of the charter, receipts are reconciled and any unspent balance is returned to you. If you run over, you pay the difference.

This is where most first-time charter clients underestimate their budget. A conservative approach is to assume you will use most of your APA. Fuel alone on a larger vessel can consume 60 to 70 percent of it during an active week.

What the Crew Actually Does

A superyacht's crew-to-guest ratio is typically 1:1 on larger vessels. On a 50-meter yacht with eight guests, you'll have a captain, first mate, chef, steward team, and deck crew of eight to twelve people. Their salaries are included in the base charter fee. Their tips are not.

Standard tip guidance in the industry is 10 to 20 percent of the base charter fee paid in cash at the end of the charter. On a €100,000 charter, that's €10,000 to €20,000 that never appears in your initial quote.

Negotiable and Non-Negotiable Items

The base charter fee has some flexibility, particularly in shoulder season or for longer bookings. Port fees and fuel are what they are. Crew tips are discretionary but culturally expected. Provisions are negotiable through the provisioning allowance.

What is firmly non-negotiable is the MYBA charter contract structure if you're booking through a reputable broker. This is actually in your interest. The MYBA contract protects both parties with clear terms on cancellation, payment schedules, and dispute resolution.

Booking Yacht Charters Through OnChain Charters

OnChain Charters surfaces full cost transparency, including estimated APA, before you confirm a booking. All charter fees are held in smart contract escrow and released to the operator on confirmation of embarkation. This eliminates the traditional wire transfer process and provides both parties with a clear on-chain record of the transaction.

For clients managing complex travel budgets or requiring audit-grade records, this model offers capabilities that no traditional broker can match.
