Why Private Jet Charter Is More Accessible Than You Think
The private aviation market has changed dramatically in the past five years. Fractional ownership programs, on-demand booking platforms, and empty leg availability have pulled the price floor down significantly. You don't need to own a jet to fly like you do.
Understanding Aircraft Categories
Charter aircraft fall into several size categories, each suited to different trip profiles.
Very Light Jets (VLJs) carry up to five passengers and are ideal for short hops under 1,500 miles. Think Embraer Phenom 100 or Cessna Citation Mustang. Hourly rates start around $2,500 to $3,500.
Light Jets carry six to eight passengers with range up to 2,000 miles. The Hawker 400 and Beechcraft Premier are popular options. Expect $3,500 to $5,500 per hour.
Midsize Jets offer stand-up cabin heights and transcontinental range. The Citation XLS and Learjet 60 sit in this category. Rates run from $5,000 to $8,000 hourly.
Heavy Jets carry up to 14 passengers with true intercontinental range. Challenger 600 series and Falcon 2000 are category leaders. $7,000 to $12,000 per hour is typical.
Ultra Long Range Jets like the Gulfstream G650 and Global 7500 fly nonstop from New York to Singapore. Rates start at $10,000 per hour and climb based on configuration.
How Charter Pricing Actually Works
Charter pricing is built from several components: the aircraft hourly rate, fuel surcharges, landing fees, crew fees, and repositioning costs (called ferry or deadhead fees). When an aircraft flies empty to pick you up, that cost is typically passed to the client.
On a platform like OnChain Charters, these components are displayed transparently before you confirm. There are no surprises on the invoice.
What Happens on Departure Day
You arrive at a Fixed Base Operator (FBO), which is a private terminal separate from the commercial terminal. No security queues. No check-in counters. You drive directly to the apron in many cases, board, and depart. Total time from car door to airborne can be under 15 minutes.
The crew typically offers catering arranged in advance, either through the FBO or directly through the operator. For longer flights, beds, conference setups, and entertainment systems are standard on heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft.
Booking on OnChain Charters
Through OnChain Charters, you select your route, departure date, and aircraft category. The platform surfaces available aircraft, confirms pricing including all fees, and allows you to pay via traditional methods or cryptocurrency. Your booking is confirmed on-chain, giving you a verifiable record of the charter agreement.
